Sessions not starting / stuck

I have multiple students working with a forked environment (Reproducible Data Science | Open Research | Renku). After a renkulab update last week (I assume) they all had to delete their current sessions and re-open a new session. This seemed to work on Monday but now multiple students report they cannot open (maybe they mean re-connect) to their sessions. They might get stuck in the loading session screen.
Does someone have some infos and can help please?

@pohleric I see around 20 paused session from that project. But I do not see any that have been resumed at all or that are stuck after having been resumed and cannot fully start. Can you give me a bit more details about what is the problem?

I am assuming that:

  • students can log into Renku
  • they see their sessions

But from my point of view it looks like no one has bothered to click “resume” on their sessions.

I think it is worth checking that your students can at least successfully log in and then see their paused sessions. And then also what happens when they try to resume them.

I did a bit more digging. And I see the problem @pohleric. I am working on it. I will give you an update soon. I am pretty sure I will be able to resolve this quickly.

As far as I understood, they are stuck in the loading screen that comes after clicking “Connect”, where there is a bullet point list. The relevant student just told me they did not delete their running session. That was how we solved the problem for the other students - deleting however also the current auto-saves. I told them to wait. I will wait if you can figure out a solution.
Many thanks.

Hi Eric, unfortunately I cannot recover the data from your students’ sessions. Initially I thought the problem is much more mundane. But it is not.

Hopefully your students pushed their data to the repositories tied to their projects. If they did not then any uncommitted or unpushed data is lost. I did a very thorough search to find any remnants of the data in the sessions. But I could not find anything. Any students that have sessions stuck in “starting” mode can just delete them and relaunch new sessions.

I apologize for this. This is the result of the maintenance problems we had on December 11 and 12. We had to restore our backups in order to restore normal operation of the platform. But it seems that the backups were either incomplete or the restoration was incomplete. We are investigating to understand what happened and we will be doing additional testing on our backup system and improvements so that this does not happen again.

Thanks for the quick response. I tell them all the time to download their notebooks (reminder to everyone  ). I will tell the last group to also restart the session.

There is no reason for people to download their code to their laptops. As long as their code/data is in the repository then it is sufficient to commit and push all changes.
